Illinois Masonic Academic Bowl

The 34th Annual Illinois Masonic Academic Bowl Tournament

This academic competition began in the fall of 1982. Frank Conry (Principal of Byron High School), Neal Pavlus ( Principal of Stillman Balley High School), Nelson Pyle (Principal of Winnebago High School), and Kim Schwartx of the Winnebago Masonic Lodge joined forces to organize the first invitational academic tournament in northern Illinois. The tournament was called the Northern Illinois Academic Bowl.

The First 16- team tournament was hosted by Winnebago High School and held in the spring of 1983. Class A schools from the counties of Boone, Carroll, Ogle, Steohenson, and Winnebago were invited to participate. 2008 marked the 25th Anniversary Tournament for the Illinois Masonic Academic Bowl For the first time in the history of the tournament, they had to have 16 regional tournaments, A total of 254 high schools registered to compete and due to sever ice storms in southern Illinois and other conflicts, 234 schools actually competed.

This year is the 32nd annual Illinois Masonic Academic Bowl This year the tournament will be a 3-Class tournament giving 3 State Champions. The program we know it today, has grown to 30 sectional sites around the state with over 300 teams participating and over 260 local Masonic Lodges providing support. No school is refused the right to participate.

St. Clair Lodge #24 sponsored Althoff Catholic High school this year coached by Mrs.Feist. In Round 1 Althoff beat Central 320-140. Round 2 Althoff beat Columbia 280-190. Round 3 Althoff beat Salem 300-240. Round 4 Althoff lost to Freeburg 200-260. Round 5 Althoff lost to Wesclin 190-250. 3 teams ended up being tied in for the finals. The judges had to break the tie with a 3rd tie breaker which left Althoff missing out on the finals only by 20 points. These kids did a great job and St. Clair Lodge #24 was very proud to sponsor them.
